DISASTER APPEAL FUND - DONATION PAGE

Many thanks for coming to our Disaster Appeal Page.
From December until May, most of Mongolia was in the grip of what is known as a dzud which is a winter of extreme severity, preceded by a drought summer. In areas that lack good pasture this means that herders were unable to stock up with hay for winter when the ground is frozen, and covered in thick layers of frozen snow.

Even worse were the ultra low temperatures, which even without the chill factor were as low as minus 45C.  In the worst affected areas this has led to millions of herd animals (mostly sheep and goats) starving and freezing to death, but large animals too such as camel, horse and cattle have also perished.

As at 31st May, among the 8,200,000 herd animals lost are over 260,000 horses, which are so essential to managing herds, as well as being the main source of transport for those living in remote rural areas.

CAMDA has been established for 10 years, and helps herding communities to get on with their lives by providing veterinary aid for their precious horses. We also have a well refurbishment project in the arid Gobi regions.

The thaw has taken place, but it will still be a while before grazing is possible for those who remain able to continue with herding as their livelihood. Many will have been forced to abandon herding altogether to end up as rural migrants in towns and especially in the capital - Ulaanbaatar - which is already overburdened with former herders with nowhere else to go.

Our appeal is for funds to provide whatever necessities are required to help those remaining. Our project for inoculating horses against parasitic diseases needs to be maintained to ensure that the vital horse population is helped to recover its losses, to improve their condition which will have seriously deteriorated due to malnutrition and the stress such a devastating winter has caused.

Your donation will be used in any way that will help relieve this distress, targeted at vulnerable small-scale herders
Our Aid Effort page gives details of how funds have been spent.

Much more help is needed to give those left a chance of picking up their shattered lives, having lost so many precious animals.

If you are a private donor and a UK taxpayer, you  will be eligible to claim for GiftAid if the amount you donate is covered by the amount of tax paid. GiftAid increases your donation - at no extra cost to you by 28% - almost a third more - with the money we can reclaim from H.M.Revenue.

Once again, thanks for taking the trouble to visit this special Disaster Appeal Page. Your donation will be  acknowledged by e-mail but we take this opportunity to express our warm thanks in anticipation of your generosity.
