During more than six years of fund raising CAMDA has helped meet the needs of thousands of nomadic herding families, with projects specific to their way of life. First, during the catastrophic dzuds of 2000-2003 with emergency fodder, followed by inoculations of camel and horse herds that were left in poor condition.

From late 2003 onwards, these projects were extended as it became apparent that small-scale herders over wide areas were still in need of this kind of grass-roots help.

With support in those early years from SPANA, later from WSPA, plus funding from other prominent organisations, a combination of three projects came to be established - Mobile Vets, Well-Refurbishments, and Grass Cutting Equipment.

In 2007, 49,000 horses were treated by injection, mouth-drench or a combination of both. Our PROJECTS Page gives full details.

Top award to CAMDA CEO

Recognition of CAMDA's longstanding commitment to Mongolia's nomadic communities has been the the announcement of the award - by presidential decree - of Mongolia's "Nairamdal" medal (Friendship medal) to our CEO - John Pirie. It is one of the country's highest awards to foreigners, normally presented personally by the President. The newly appointed UK Mongolian Ambassador - H.E. Mr Bulgaa Altangerel, during a visit to Cambridge on 7th July, presented the medal to John. For fuller details see News page.

The Mongolian Experience

Last summer CAMDA hosted a reception at Homerton College, Cambridge to celebrate "The Mongolian Experience".

Over 100 guests including the Mongolian Ambassador H.E. Dalrain Davaasambuu had the opportunity to see photographic and calligraphic exhibitions, a documentary about the Mongolian culture and lifestyle, as well as live performances given by a musician, a singer and two wrestlers.

The creator of the calligraphic exhibition - Davaakhuu Sukhbaatar (Suki) - was present to demonstrate his masterly skills by producing personal monograms for guests.

On the adjacent lawn, a traditional ger had been erected, internally decorated with colourful furnishings and ornaments.

Sponsored Events & Donations

Our scope for funding three projects fundamental to the Mongolian nomadic way of life is much increased by sponsored events.
4-wheeled rallies, two-wheeled coast-to-coast cycle rides (some even on one wheel!), and other more leisurely ways of travelling around, all raising essential funds to ensure that these projects continue unabated. For full details of these events, the "what" the "why" and the

"where", go to SPONSORED EVENTS page, to see what our supporters are getting up to, or into. Trouble for some of them no doubt. Adventure for most (although that often means a journey into the unknown). All agree however, that what they are doing isn't just for the fun or the adventure, but at the same time it's to raise cash that will benefit a lot of people whose lives are in disorder, and their livelihoods in the balance.

Made in Mongolia !

CAMDA has introduced a lightweight mower that can be manufactured in Mongolia.

Its prototype was recently manufactured in a small engineering workshop, and it is capable of being pulled by just one small horse. Following trials, apart from a modification needed to reduce vibration, it performed well as expected.

Now modified and satisfactorily tested, a small batch is to follow on. For further reading about this remarkable development, funded for CAMDA by WSPA, and with the invaluable engineering expertise provided by Developing Technologies of London Imperial College to make it all possible, click here.
