Children are introduced to horses very early in their lives, since they will play such a big part in their future lives. In a landscape of few tracks, let alone roads, nomadic children will learn to horse-ride with increasing skill, as they later become involved in herd management, as well as use the horse as transport, for sport and leisure. |

This tradidional ger being erected will be home to a nomadic family. It can be dismantled/assembled in a couple of hours but will contain bedding, a stove, kitchen utensils, and simple furniture serving a family frequently on the move from one pasture to another. Its outer felt is made of wool, wetted, flattened, and when dry, wrapped around the framework. Wool is a super insulator against heat and cold, and with the extremes of temperature Mongolia can experience (from -45C to +45C) good insulation is essential. The scene inside of a mother and daughter is probably the youngster being given some cookery advice. | ![]() |
