boys wrestling

(left) These youngsters are engaging in one of Mongolia's most popular leisure activities - wrestling. They already seem to have got to grips with the right moves, but as adults (right) they will be taking it more seriously - with one intention - to beat the opponent!
Wrestling bouts among herdsmen are quite common and draw a good crowd from the surrounding area, including family members urging their menfolk on. In the west we are accustomed to arenas, rings and ropes, and a padded floor on which to break ones fall, but their arena is the grassland, rough and unprepared.
If a fall happens to be on a small rock or boulder unnoticed in the grass a cracked rib could be a souvenir of the bout ! It is a national sport, and great pains are taken (literally) to be the best in any contest.

toddler learning to ride

Children are introduced to horses very early in their lives, since they will play such a big part in their future lives. In a landscape of few tracks, let alone roads, nomadic children will learn to horse-ride with increasing skill, as they later become involved in herd management, as well as use the horse as transport, for sport and leisure.

ger assembly

This tradidional ger being erected will be home to a nomadic family. It can be dismantled/assembled in a couple of hours but will contain bedding, a stove, kitchen utensils, and simple furniture serving a family frequently on the move from one pasture to another. Its outer felt is made of wool, wetted, flattened, and when dry, wrapped around the framework. Wool is a super insulator against heat and cold, and with the extremes of temperature Mongolia can experience (from -45C to +45C) good insulation is essential. The scene inside of a mother and daughter is probably the youngster being given some cookery advice.

The inner frame is clearly seen where the felt has been rolled up perhaps to increase ventilation on a hot day.
